Searching for the best cruise for families is really four questions: how old are the children, how long can they stay entertained, how much space do you need, and how much do you want to spend? The awards help with the first two. Here is what recently won family-related categories and why.

Reading Family Awards by Age

  • Under five: look at nursery hours, splash areas for swim-diaper ages and whether family cabins have room for a cot. A families award does not guarantee all three.
  • Five to twelve: the classic kids’ club years. Character programs and themed play areas are where family-award ships tend to shine.
  • Teens: an activities award often matters more than a families award — climbing walls, slides, sports courts and teen-only lounges.
  • Three generations: pair a family-award ship with connecting cabins or a suite; see Family Group Cruises for multi-generation planning.

The Best Cruise for Kids Is Not Always the Biggest Ship

Big ships win activity and large-ship awards because they can fit more in. But some families do better on a mid-size ship with shorter walks, quicker embarkation and easier-to-find children. Celebrity Millennium was named the World’s Best Midsize Cruise Ship in 2026 — a reminder that a calmer ship can still be an award winner, though Celebrity markets itself more to adults and couples than to young children.

Also weigh the itinerary. A three- or four-night first cruise tests whether your children like ship life before you commit to a week. Port days with beaches and easy shore activities — Shore Activities lists family-friendly options port by port — can matter as much to a child as the waterslide.

Family Award Winners and Cabin Choice

The award goes to the ship; your experience depends on the cabin. Families of four or five should check which cabin types actually sleep that many, whether a connecting pair works out better than one large room, and where the cabin sits relative to the kids’ club and pool deck. Cruise Ship Deck Plans explains how to read the plan before you choose.

Best Cruise for Families: FAQ

What is the best cruise for families, according to the awards?

In 2026 the World Cruise Awards named Disney Wish the world’s best cruise ship for families, and Travel + Leisure readers ranked Disney Cruise Line No. 1 among large-ship lines. Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas won best ship for activities. Which is best for your family depends on ages, budget and where you want to sail.

Is the best cruise for kids also the best for teens?

Not always. Younger children usually love character-led clubs and splash zones; teens tend to prefer ships with lots of independent activities and their own spaces. Ask about age groupings in the clubs before booking.

Do family award winners cost more?

Popular family ships fill early around school holidays, so prices for those weeks can be higher. Sailing outside peak holiday weeks, or booking early, usually gives the widest choice of family cabins.
